Naming
University of Wynwood is named after Tobias Rodriguez-Wynwood, who opened the first business in what is now the Wynwood arts district in 1878. Called "Tobias's Fine Art and Gray Cement Store", the business was Miami's only source for fine art and gray cement for over fifty years. A self-taught polymath, TRW took it upon himself to nurture Miami's 19th Century poetry scene by holding roundtable workshops and craft lectures on the store's back porch. He died in a hot-air balloon accident in 1955.
